Played to Black
I'm sure you remember the Vogue Italia Black Issue. You know the one where the publishers of Vogue out did themselves in my (dark brown) opinion with a wealth of rich dark chocolate visual treats.Well, now they've gone deeper into the dark by launching Vogue Black. It's an interesting site/blog that features the more colorful side of beauty and bathes the boundaries of fashion's apartheid in a sea of fresh new flavors.
I hope they can keep it up. Kudos Vogue.
Indulge yourself. https://sites.google.com/site/mayuradocs/PinIt.png

L.A. Gear : Hippity Hopps, Stompin'
Dell: Adamo

Problem: We (people of color, various orientations & women) are too often used or related to as inanimate objects. Various coat hangers, products stands and props. We are evocations that underscore a product's coolness, sexiness or to approximate diversity. I gotta give it to the agency, the ad does say what they intended. The black model gives you sleek, sexy and fashion savvy. My indoctrination (read programming) to all of this does not fail me here. But we are tired of this portrayal and most general market agencies are far to comfortable with it. There-in is the problem. We are rarely implored to facilitate the intelligence a product's brand might impart as a white male would be.
But it's ok, baby-steps for now, we aint mad at ya, yet. The people who made this ad have probably never noticed how often a brother is the first to die in most every movie (that's right we're keeping count). Even in The cult classic "A Christmas Story." What did that kid do with that Red Ryder BB gun?? But that's another blog post, don't even get me started.
Suggestion: How do you make this work and nobody gets hurt? Well, for one thing minorities could toughen up a bit and stop whining about ads and sh*t. Nope, that is not it. Maybe art direction could be abstracted more. Or if they want to keep the minimalist feel the model could give off just an inkling of life. Whatever happens it needs just a pinch, a hint of... I don't know, more conceptual support.

Adidas, product as promotion

More and more branding becomes the tired ass buzz word of the day. Some products supersede that precept and become their own self fulfilling promotional prophecy. Adidas is one of those brands. They have unwittingly avoided the over exposure trap that Nike has waddled in for years. So much so that Nike has become (in the States at least) very reliant upon their advertising. Adidas has remained positioned at a space where they are still a pleasant surprise to see. The shoes still have a classic air that Nike's throwback "Dunks" can only seem to muster amongst it's fanatics.
It would be interesting to see another brand, like say a health and beauty brand inspire that same feeling of classic & nostalgic, with a modern twist. https://sites.google.com/site/mayuradocs/PinIt.png
Baby Phat Farm Ultra Lux

The Simmons conglomerate U.S. Hip Hop megalomaniacal corp has been going all super uppity hyper luxury on us for some time now. This latest effort is no different. This was a great angle perfected by Diddy and others in the late 90's. It began to wane in the mid 2000's due to the punch of (post grunge) deep Hip Hop fashion. Of late the economy has drained the few remaining dollars out of the fake rich fashion set. The slick photography and trademark quasi-editorial style of this campaign may have lost some of it's influence but, it's a classic cliche that will always return to vogue. Americans will always want to appear richer than they are. So as soon as we get through this government sponsored wealth/power grab ass session and the trickle down economics resumes, we will once again shop like there's no tomorrow and the Simmons, well, their rich asses will be waiting for us on the other side of this recession with rhinestone labeled garb just your size. https://sites.google.com/site/mayuradocs/PinIt.png
Parish, Fall 08

I don't know if I like this. It's good enough. Solid, interesting design, good to look at. Typical Hip Hop mean muggin', atypical looking guy. Drippy line things coming down. I kinda like the drippy liney things, like a melty upc code. I... think I like it. You? https://sites.google.com/site/mayuradocs/PinIt.png

Levi's 501 Live unbuttoned

These are nice to look at. I always marvel at how big companies can just do brand maintenance ads. It's really cool to be able do approach projects from a artistic point of view that allows people a chance to simply enjoy the intangibles of a brands culture. People are smart and they get it. Props to the agency.
