Target: Dream In Color

Target Honors the Accomplishments of African American Women

"We’re celebrating Black History Month this year by introducing four amazing women who contribute to the proud legacy of African Americans. Meet them below and be inspired."
It looks great. https://sites.google.com/site/mayuradocs/PinIt.png

I agree with you...this is a great concept especially from an organization like Target (or Tar-jhay if you think it's too high class) and the highlighting of African American women other than Beyonce really caught my attention...

But you know what kills me...as a type designer at least... the use of the "chunky-distressed-woodblock-construction paper cut out" font when you are addressing people of color who are courageous, philanthropic and determined to make the world better than they found it.

OK...I know I might sound a little out of it but this is a subject that is not as noticeable to the average "browsing" audience. The usage of that type ( and styles like it) can send an unconscious message to the viewer about what society as a whole could really see our people as...Interesting reading on race and typography here:

I'm not taking away from bold and refreshing statement that Target is making with this initiative...it's very admirable... I'm just saying that the agency that came up with the design concept could have used a typeface that resonants the values of these artistic achievers.
