50 Years Forward: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham

In Birmingham, 1963 is a challenging subject. During the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, our city was elevated to the forefront of the national conversation. And for so many reasons, it’s both a blemish and a badge of honor for our community, representing both the best and worst of humanity. So this year, 50 Years Forward from those historic happenings, the City of Birmingham and the Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau are putting together a series of once-in-a-lifetime events commemorating the courage of those who fought so bravely for the equality of us all. From concerts and galas to speaker series and memorials, our city will be teeming with events this year that help us remember the past and look forward to a brighter future together.
At Big Communications, we were humbled and honored to be asked to take part in this monumental moment in the life of our city. So how do you design an advertising, marketing, interactive and public relations campaign that will appeal to everyone from entrepreneurs to foot soldiers? We had to simplify it down to something everyone agrees on: equality. Our team design the logo and identity system around the number “50″ and the unifying idea of equality that represents what the Movement fought so bravely for. We also created50YearsForward.com, a powerful new website that tells the history of that fateful year and lists the full calendar of events for 2013.

So as the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham occurs, it’s important for all of us to learn from, to understand and to celebrate The Movement that Changed the World.
