Hate to be a design snob, but the fonts and font usage was completely offbeat from the Roots brand. If this has the blessing of the Roots, then use Helvetica!
tb I too gave the font treatment the side-eye. but the film was decent.
its second nature for designers to automatically focus on the fonts, no matter the media, its relationship to the subject and how representative of the subject it actually is (or appears to be) - font styles are revelatory to the thought process for designers - we ask "what was the designer thinking about when he/she did that?" - i think they just wanted a bold, 'cool' looking font and when placed against the serifed font, it works well enough. look at the film as a 10-minute gig-poster and its more than appropriate.
my only gripe (as a roots fan instead of graphic designer) is that its a film more OF the roots than being actually about them... but its shot exceptionally well; very well made. but i'm hoping its just a trailer; please tell me its just a trailer and more film is on the way... TELL ME, I SAID!
