Is this a metaphor for the current day advertising? I mean both in it's hiring practices and and the work it produces. Is this secretly what the producers wanted to shine a light on? Or are they just that insensitive.

I saw that in the episode last night. I took it to mean they were showing the ignorance and insensitivity of the time. As to a reflection on today's current practices... let me say that the industry is still too segregated for responsible awareness to have evolved.
PG, it was far past the hey day of black face in the 60's. it just seemed like some sorta weird throwback anachronistic scene.
