1st Black Vogue fall cover in over 20 years

That is; she is the first (half) Black woman to bless the big fall fashion cover in over 20 years. The Fall issue is always the biggest of the year and the best selling. So previously this cover is reserved or only considered for fairer models. Now maybe Essence's new fashion editor will even the score by placing Alessandria Ambrosio on the cover. I would so buy that issue.

Do we really care? I know I don't, it's a publication that I rarely read, and when I do it's at the store while waiting in line.

I repeat, I'm waiting for the white lady on the cover of Essence. A lil balance you know.

No one but dinosaurs in the fashion industry cares about American Vogue. And even if 200+ pages of ads and tired photo shoots were still relevant, why should everyone get excited because Anna Skeletor put someone with melanin on the Fall cover after 20 years?

re: a white girl on Essence cover--I really wish they would do that to put that poor mag out of its misery.

Blu, you are not holding anything back are you? Great, I mean great points.

Would a white woman on the cover of Essence put it out of business?

what a great question, is there a really dark answer?

Essence's readership is so suspect of much of its content in recent years, I definitely believe even a bi-racial model who could "pass" would be the last nail in the coffin. I haven't read Essence in years cuz I have outgrown it, but they still have a few legacy readers who would not be trying to hear about a white girl from Victorias Secret on their magazine. Esp. now with the news of the White fashion editor coming on board.

I read on another site where Halle says in the Vogue issue that she is so honored, and it means sooooo much of a woman of POC to be on the September issue, blah blah. Another Sally Field moment from (apparently) the only Black actress in America. I don't expect an actress to turn away this kind of publicity no matter how fast print is dying, but i'm just tired of white folks always being told their ice is colder. F-- Vogue (sorry for the profanity, i used to work in the fashion biz and know firsthand how openly racist and misogynist it is).

And the hilarious flat booty jeans post you have on your site---i know most Europeans in this industry would kill themselves b4 admitting boy shaped white women are not the ultimate ideal. They don't even want to acknowledge the curvy White girls (like maybe that redhead from Mad Men) as you noted in your post; they would rather call them obese and make them hate themselves. And they have an Asian merchandising guy pontificating about what's considered curvaceous? LOLOLOL

Thanbk God that Halle Berry is the on Black woman that is beautiful enough, rich enough & brown enough to represent ALL Black women. This is so epic!

missed this too! I remember seeing this issue on the stores and...not really caring. Somehow the Halle Berry mystique was ruined when she got married.

I feel you Bluetopaz. I respect Vogue as a long standing mag but maybe someone of Halle's stature can be a little less gracious and a little more "About fucking time" like Komora probably would

So late to the game, but...
Huh? Why all the bated breath for a white Essence cover model? I don't even read Essence, but the whole notion reveals some serious missing the point. I mean, "a little balance"? For real?? The whole reason Essence exists is because practically every other magazine is filled with white people by default. Even now.
I like irony too, but I'm not seeing the point of/upside to a white Essence cover model (beyond thumbing nose at Essence-- which can be done without bringing white people into the mix).

The deal is this: Essence is targeted to black women. Hence the black cover models. Vogue is targeted to ALL women. Hence the... wait a second...

Was I surprised that Vogue's first black cover model in decades was black-but-not-too-black? Oh hell no. And all the "I'm so honored" was kind of sad. But I'm just not getting how a white Essence cover model would help to address any of that. I'm feeling like it would make it all significantly worse.
