Black nominees, winners at The Oscars deliver all-time high audience for ABC

(March 10, 2010) With anticipation that the film, "Precious" might deliver multiple African-American winners at this year's Academy Awards, black households watched Hollywood's biggest night in record numbers. More than four million black viewers tuned in to the special, topping last year's audience of 3.0 million and taking the No.1 spot on the week's most watched program. ABC network's Red Carpet pre-awards coverage pulled in 2.6 million viewers for the No.2 position on the Top 25. African-Americans were 10.3 percent of the total audience of 41.7 million for the Oscars. "Precious" walked away with two awards including best supporting actress for Mo'Nique.

The record-setting viewership wasn't enough for ABC to overtake CBS as the week's most watched TV network in black homes. CBS notched 14.2 million viewers for nine of its chart making shows. ABC posted 13.4 million for six of its entries. Fox came in third with 10.4 million for six shows.

The total number of viewers watching the Top 25 most popular shows in black homes, according to Nielsen, was 40.1 million. That represents an increase of 22.5 percent over the previous week's total of 32 million.

This means that we watch too much TV and not enough reading.

CMV, Perhaps or it means some of our quasi-monolithic tendencies give us power we should learn to yield more effectively.

Is this just mainstream/major television networks? What is interesting is that none of these shows are on BET. Maybe BET should look at the top shows blacks are watching and change their programming...
