Dave, historically Africans of the diaspora have been refer to monkeys in the most derogatory manner. There is still a strong stigma associated with this "less than human -- not as smart as others" association.

i first read about this on Womanist Musings. let's just say that my jaw dropping was the lesser of my other reactions...
FG, my jaw is so bruised up from it involuntarily hitting the ground I may just tie it shut.
Wow. How does this idea go from just an idea to ending up on store shelves without any red flags??? What year is this again??
Could somebody explain to me what the problem is here ?
Some people see this and can't believe it even exists and I just can't see anything at all offensive about it. Who was offended by this and why ?
Ah. The video explains. The guy clearly doesn't see the racism inherent in his own actions.
Both dolls ship with animals and headbands but only the black one is racially offensive. Why ? Because it's black.
If you treat someone differently because of the colour of their skin, that's being racist.. and that's exactly what he did.
Interestingly, CostCo did the non-racist thing and treated all dolls the same, regardless of skin colour, by taking them all off the shelves.
