The Rise and Inevitable Liberation of the Black Creative Class
Urban Studies theorist Richard Florida makes a living writing about a group of individuals called the “creative class.” While some of our great American cities have seen precipitous declines in this postindustrial, Florida argues that our country’s still relevant cities have one thing in common—hipsters. If only Detroit, Baltimore and Cleveland could have sold hipsters on the luxury of being in the rustbelt, they too could be like Seattle. Or, even better—Brooklyn.
Ok, Maybe not. But it appears that in our intensely hipster-aware popular culture, the idea of a creative class does have some resonance. Despite most of the creative class focus being centered around a white upper-middle class experience, I think there is sufficient evidence to say that over the last ten years we have witnessed over the rise of a sort a “black creative class.”
While not quite a fully cohesive group, the black creative class does share some similar traits. Because most of the group has been to college, and a considerable amount grew up in the suburbs, the black creative class fits somewhat neatly into the American definition of middle-class. After school, they generally migrate to a large city where a critical mass of other black creatives can be found. They are weary of essentializing conceptions of race but also discount the idea that we are living in a “post-racial” America. While most do not enter the arts or the entertainment industry directly, popular culture is the lingua franca of the black creative class. If you post an article that is critical of Tyler Perry on your Facebook wall, one of your black creative class friends will probably “like” it (if they did not already post it themselves). If you are not sure if you are talking to a black creative see if they respond positively to any of the following: Stringer Bell, Erykah Badu’s “Evolving” tattoo, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Hillman College, She’s Gotta Have It, early nineties black fashion, J*Davey, or Jean-Michel Basquiat (patron saint of black creatives).
After spending tens of minutes doing copious field research, here are some of my initial findings on what makes the black creative class tic:
1) Our revolution was televised
I am hesitant to give undue influence to television changes in our culture but for the black creative class, you cannot get around the fact that we grew up in the golden age of black television. In our childhood years, there was always a wholesome representation of the black middle class on TV. From The Cosby Show and A Different World to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Living Single, we consistently saw black families, black education, and black working professionals in prime time. Of course, these shows were being aired at a moment when the black middle class was increasing but, as a cultural backdrop, I think having these trends reinforced on a weekly basis has been critical for how the black creative class sees the world.

Toyota's Green Initiative to promote sustainability at black colleges

The Toyota Green Initiative was recently launched as an environmental stewardship platform for historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). The initiative will give students and alumni the benefits of adopting a sustainable lifestyle. The program will provide multiple touch points to mobilize the collegiate audience to go green including a content-rich website and an HBCU campus tour.
At the hub of the Toyota Green Initiative is the interactive website, www.ToyotaGreen.com, which will provide easy cost-saving tips on going green, eco-conscious articles, videos, campus events and volunteer programs. ToyotaGreen.com features a Promise Drive to secure personal commitments from site visitors on the reduction of their ecological footprint and adoption of a green living philosophy.
"The Toyota Green Initiative is an extension of our key focus to support educational and environmental programs and provides our future leaders the tools and resources to be environmental stewards in local communities," said Jim Colon, vice president of Toyota product communications for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Continuously working towards sustainable mobility, Toyota strives to preserve the natural environment and establish systems to provide a brighter future for coming generations."

Latest Official Poster For Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls”
This version will be used for the general and the industry as the producers etc. ask the academy to consider the film for an Oscar. I like it and hope they win 47 gold statues and women the world over never cry again and something about unicorns, butterflies and afros.

Forbes Says Tyler Perry & Jay-Z Will Be Billionaires Soon!

Forbes magazine has released its annual list of the 400 richest people in the USA. And, no surprise, Ms Oprah Winfrey is the only African American on it, with an estimated $2.7 billion worth.
In this year’s issue, Forbes also mentions those folks whom the magazine believes will be on the premiere list in the near future, calling them “Billionaires In The Making” (by the way, entry into the club requires that each member have a worth of at least $1 billion).
Noteworthy names on the list of “Billionaires In The Making” include the following: Tyler Perry ($350 million estimated) Jay-Z ($450 million estimated) Tiger Woods($500 million estimated) and Michael Jordan (also $500 million estimated).
So here’s the billion dollar question in reaction to all these “rich people” lists… So What?

For Colored Girls - Official Trailer
Here's the movie we've all been 'debating' for. TP's theatrical version of "For Colored Girls." Will it or won't it be the movie event of the year. Will this timeless classic be maligned or made well? Most are hoping for the latter and feel that Tyler Perry has so often given us the former.
This cast of heavy-hitters & top-notch script spitters should be able to bring this story to a vibrant life. But we all know a director is the painter of any film masterpiece or its doom. I for one have high hopes (again). Because I know this film has all the right ingredients to be a smash hit or a piece of celluloid something or other.
I like the way the posters follow the commercial in look and feel (or vice versa).

I love Tyler Perry's Movie
...Posters! (Gotcha) I've said it before and I stand behind it, well some of them, OK a few of them. Alright, so I'm moonwalking a bit off my statement. But c'mon these joints are deep dish movie poster eye-candy. Not to mention the light they portray some of the most stellar talent to ever grace the silver screen is bezerk. They even have Miss Jackson looking like she's gonna do some acting.
If I had to pick a fave it would be the Whoopi poster, she looks all spiritualistical.

It's official: Light-skin is Back!!!
The former president of light skin has returned to reign once again. With Wesley Snipe on a downward spiral and Morris Chestnut on the Tyler Perry track, it's only a matter of time before we see Al B. Sure haunting us again. But, Al B. Sure's son has been sighted on the lurk.
White friends: This is a running joke in the black community of a perceived difference between skin colors. It used to be a more tense situation but it has devolved into the realm of humor and common hilarity. If any inter-racial discord or violence were to ensue you would have been instructed where to go and how to conduct yourselves as to not be mistaken as a light-skinned African American.
No actual light-skinned people were harmed in the making of this magazine cover.

Diggy has Big Shoe
The Simmons family has been on the path of becoming a Dynasty for over 30 years now. To see the nurture/education/environment (and bank roll) they have put behind the next generation of baby moguls, they have firmly secured that moniker. His big Sissy's spun off into their own show that spawned a fashion shoe tour de force along with his many other family fortunes. Now enter the Diggy domination phase. Sanders\Wingo scoops in to smartly capitalize on the next big thing before the next big thang. Like Sand-Wing used Isaiah Mustafah before he hits the big screen with Tyler Perry or maybe as PowerMan (S\W -- always a trendsetter never the trend). Now watch a few months to a year from now this kid will be bigger than Antoine Dodson and the world should note S\W was there bringing in the early star-power making the little fellow look as iconic as his pre-ordained potential.
Look at the cinematography.

Kanye West’s “Power” Video/Portrait
The last of the big ass videos along with the big ass video budgets. This kinda production money is only reserved for TV 30 second commercials around SuperBowl time or 2 hour long Tyler Perry movies. But if your gonna go big, this is the way to do it. I think it's GAW-jus, visually, it was the best one minute forty-two-seconds of my day... except when I'm looking at you Boo... you know who you are. (wink)

Is this the Poster for Tyler Perry's; For Colored Girls
I'm sure you've heard by now the classic play is up for a Tyler Perry make-over. The purist are up in arms and afraid TP will put a Madea spin on it and lead many a young lady to the ledge. But you have to remember he had a very gentle hand in the promoting of Precious and according to the Academy of Arts & Sciences it was an Oscar nod worthy production. So he has history with keeping things as they were. But the fact of the matter is this is not (yet) the poster or even the teaser poster for the new movie.
A brilliant artist by the name of Tatyana Fazlalizdeh put paint to canvas, imagination to artistry & will to power to create her own vision version of how lovely the poster could be. We think it should be the poster for the movie. After all there is about one very actively working movie poster designer who happens to be black. Here's a chance to launch this greattalent onto a bigger brighter stage. What do you think Tyler Perry? can we give the Sister a shot?

Precious Plagiarism?
As Saphire's cum Lee Daniel's cum Tyler Perry's cum Oprah Winfrey's Precious movie climbs the box office charts more info comes to light about the origins about that most precious of poster designs. We all know that nothing is born in a vacuum, unless that vacuum happens to suck up a old quasi-famous designer's somewhat famous poster design and spits out a nearly concrete carbon copy. The above right image is from Lanny Sommese. This is his 1987 Rape Line poster. I guess inspiration is where you find and for most designer it's really about where you hide it. Because this is far from an occasional occurrence.

Tyler Perry's Bad All By Myself: Posters

Taraji P. Henson is ripping up all kinds of troubled sultry on this the second (or third) teaser poster for Tyler Perry's latest comedic romp de cinema.

Somehow the design team manages to rip all kinds of troubled design ideas from Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs. I read that it may be an "homage" (pronounced all fancy without the 'H'). If by "homage" you mean; blatantly rip-off a great idea, water it down and serve it up to another market who probably have never seen it before, then this my friend is an homage of the highest caliber. Careers have been built on this brand of shiftiness, present company included. I still like it for this market.
