LeBron James plays small for State Farm®

Question: If Lebron James wasn't in this commercial would you like it? Answer: Doesn't matter he's in it and you like it! But seriously watch it again and tell me what you think.

He's dancing and... and he's Lebron! It's kinda cute, right?

French Playboy Black Issue (NSFW)

I was recently informed that there was a Playboy Black issue out there somewhere so I had to post it. Nothing more to say here. This is just filler copy to pretend I have something profound to say and to pretend I didn't google just to ogle.

Warning the pictures after the bump could get you fired.

How Not to Become Black History

by Craig Brimm
By some accounts, and rightfully so, Multicultural advertising is going the way of the leisure suit. And except for my Uncle Bo, most are fine with the disappearance of the built-in belted bell-bottomed grown folks one-piece. However, the wealth of culture that is the ethnic experience in America should not so quickly be put aside and the accounts thrust into the hands of inexperienced and under-equipped shops just for the sake of easier brand management. While it’s becoming increasingly apparent that brand management no longer feels that way. I feel the onus is completely on multicultural agencies to prove they’re not to be reduced to sardonic footnotes in the annuls of advertising history. Here are some suggestions on how to avoid becoming Black history ahead of your time.

Think like Malcolm act like Martin.
Malik El-Shabaaz aka Malcom X was an intensely critical thinker. He could rapidly and incisively discern the times and situations, in which he lived.  Agencies need to do the same. Martin Luther King had the distinct ability to make messages plain, and to deliver them in a fashion that rode a positive emotion directly into your consciousness where it would only flourish. These are two historical perspectives MC shops should apply a lot more of. I know it’s not easy to do, but it’s damn worth the effort.
Get off the Amistad.
In the movie Amistad, based on the true story of a slave revolt, the captives figured out a way to turn the tide. Sometimes you’ve got to rock the boat and then get off the boat. Leave the plantation even. Multicultural shops will need to create new systems of servicing clients. Methods that are data based and quantifiably culturally-based. There is an established way of doing things in most agencies. If you have a vision for a better way and you are allowed to execute it, move on. Get your own shop (fully loaded computer), and a client or two and make it happen. Small general market shops are popping up daily freeing themselves from the plantation mentality and making new models. If there is anything minorities in America know how to do; it is how to create a niche that becomes world renown and very desirable.

In Memory of Dwayne McDuffie

KMBA has learned that comic writer, animation producer and respected industry veteran Dwayne McDuffie passed away. The cause of death and specific details are unknown at this time.

A native of Detroit, McDuffie officially joined the comics industry as part of Marvel Comics editorial in the late '80s. While working on special projects for the publisher, he quickly made his name as a writer creating series such as "Damage Control" and helping to redefine the Deathlok character to fan and critical acclaim. He soon left the staff to become a full time freelance writer, becoming a voice in the industry for diversity, particularly fighting against stereotypical portrayals of people of color on the comic book page.

In 1993, McDuffie co-founded Milestone Media along with creators Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle. The company's mission statement involved expanding the role of minorities in comics both on the page and off, and they launched (through DC Comics) a line of superheroes that included "Static," "Icon" and Xombi" – all of which McDuffie had a hand in creating.

Over the years, the writer contributed to scores of notable comic book launches and series, always with a keen eye on character, regardless of race. In 2000, his character, Static, made the leap totelevision in the Saturday morning cartoon "Static Shock." In 2003, an episode of the show dealing with gun violence earned the writer the Humanitas Prize.

In recent years, McDuffie pursued dual tracks in animation and comics writing. He served as story editor for the popular "Justice League Unlimited" animated series and wrote a number of DC's recent direct-to-DVD animated films. McDuffie had notable runs on comic series "Fantastic Four" and "Justice League of America," often incorporating Black characters into the core of the fabled franchises.

McDuffie's latest work was the script for the "All Star Superman" animated adaptation, which went on sale today in stores across America. CBR ran a lengthy interview with McDuffie about that project last week and caught up with him, looking in good health and acting jovial, last week at the Paley Center's Los Angeles premier for the film. McDuffie's last known public statement was a post to his Facebook page Sunday at 12:17 PM Pacific. He was scheduled to sign at Golden Apple Comics tomorrow evening as part of Reggie Hudlin'sReggie's World launch party.

Kobe Bryant “The Black Mamba” Film

Finally after what seems like months (because it was) "The Black Mamba" film featuring Kobe Bryant and a handful of other A-list celebs is unleashed. Directed by Robert Rodriguez this piece bring you all the hype of the past previews and slams them all into one 6 minute masterpiece of hyperbole and kitsch. I gotta say I like the style but it may be wearing a little thin as Rodriguez is sorta laughing at himself and betting well jump in for some psycho hoops. I take it in the spirit it was intended and I will probably watch it 5 more times.

Roy Eaton an Testament to Diversity

I spotted this post at the always stunning MultiCultClassics. It's simply amazing. Roy Eaton cross the stagnant color line in advertising way back in 1955 and flourished. Here's a quote he left at MulticCultClassics:

I was the “Jackie Robinson” of general market creatives. Starting at Y&R in 1955. I am appalled at the lack of progress that has been made till now. I have a presentation that I gave at DraftFCB and will be giving at my alma mater Y&R that addresses the action that must be taken on both sides of this equation. To continue the lie that “there just isn’t enough Black talent out there” is a cover-up for an American malady that must be addressed. I am open to presenting my solution to any Agency willing to hear the “TRUTH ABOUT THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY” and how to make meaningful progress.

 Love,
Roy Eaton

URGENT GENIUS is a weekend long ad/design contest for the world

The Urgent Genius Weekender is a competition designed to explore these questions. Teams from all around the world including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, China, USA and the UK will have 48 hours to make content related to a trending topic that's popular in their country or around the globe. At the end of the 48 hours, you'll have 7 days to share your infographic, film, website, YouTube mashup, game or photo-blog with the world. The team with the most likes/retweets/views wins. What's in it for you? Global recognition. Plus, the best stuff will be featured in a talk given by iris Worldwide's Grant Hunter and Jon Burkhart at South By Southwest Interactive in March. The most shared work will also be included in a book to be published in Autumn 2011. Other prizes we're working on include commissions from top production companies in your home country.

Industry Trend: American Renaissance

Every two to three months or so the advertising industry falls into a deep rut. Some would call it a trend, I would call it straight jacking. This time however it appears to be more of a necessity. As the economy rebounds with six straight quarters of growth going into the seventh Americans are beginning to dust themselves off and get back to work. And we'd be damned if marketers weren't in line to catch some of that spare change we tend to toss around when we get a few loose bucks. The best way to do that right about now is through good old fashioned American pride. If you make American's feel good enough about themselves and then tie your product into the heart of that manufactured ecstasy, well you've really got your self something. Here's a few of the flag-wavin'- steel-millin' - heartland saluting commercials to come out lately and tap that red, white and blue ass.

Adidas: Fast World Dwight

Stardust Studios just finished a two spot campaign for Adidas / NBA. The brief was to create a unique, stylistic journey using the thoughts of Dwight Howard and Derek Rose. The Agency, 180 LA, asked Stardust to explore any and all options to bring it to life, and to consider multiple illustration styles to find the one that best fit both the Adidas brand and D-Rose's and Dwight's personalities. They were extremely collaborative but also very flexible in allowing them to go off creatively. Stardust came up with these two very unique
spots that mix cell over live action footage - a technique inspired by the A-ha video "Take On Me".
